Microtops II® Sunphotometer

Solar Light’s Microtops II has become the world-standard scientific instrument for fast, convenient, and accurate measurements of the ozone layer. Just point the hand-held instrument at the sun and, within a few seconds, it provides the total ozone amount within a percent or two of that measured by much larger and more costly Dobson and Brewer spectrophotometers. Evidence for Microtops II’s success is that the Solar Light-sponsored paper that first described Microtops II has received nearly 400 citations in the scholarly literature.

Early versions of the Microtops design proved more accurate than data provided by NASA’s Nimbus-7 satellite measurements, and within a percent of the Brewer spectrophotometer installed at the Geronimo Creek Observatory in Texas. The design has been updated over the years to collect and store up to 800 samples of 5 wavelengths of sunlight, which can be reviewed on the instrument’s display or downloaded to a computer. Microtops II also measures temperature and pressure.
